TRANSPORTATION
Interstate 29 runs north and south from Sisseton and is one mile from the city
limits. Directly through the edge of town, running east and west, is SD Highway
10.
The Sisseton Municipal Airport is two and one half miles from Sisseton. The
airport has a 3,400 foot lighted asphalt runway. For further information

A recently renovated railroad runs between Sisseton and Milbank. The railroad is
an essential factor in the shipping of grain in Northeast South Dakota. The

CHILD CARE
Rainbow Day Care is a licensed group family day care provider located
within the Tekakwitha Living Center. The Rainbow Day Care offers a structured
preschool atmosphere. There is one other registered day care provider in
Sisseton, and one additional licensed group family day care provider as well as
child care available from individuals in their homes. The Sisseton-Wahpeton
Oyate also has one licensed group family day care provider. |

EDUCATION |
The Sisseton community takes great pride in the outstanding school
systems available to the community young and adults.
The Sisseton Public School System enrolls about 1,200 students in
K-12 from Sisseton and the Surrounding communities.

WESTSIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL includes K-5 and is located on Walnut and Pine
Streets between 3rd and 5th Avenues West. The school principal is Dan Yost.
SISSETON HIGH SCHOOL & Sisseton Middle School. The Sisseton Middle
School includes grades 6 thru 8 and the principal is Craig Ebert. The
Sisseton High School includes grades 9-12 and Gary Evjen is the principal.
Both facilities are located at 516 8th Avenue West.

Dr. Steve Schulte serves as the superintendent of the entire Sisseton Public School
system. His office is located at the High School. Cheryl Karst serves as
business manager, along with Mark Moen, Kathy Balvin and Marge Moen in the
Business Office.
Sisseton’s school colors are red and black and they are proudly named the “Sisseton Redmen”.
Homecoming is held the third or fourth week in September. A homecoming
parade for the community is held in September annually.
Pre-school/ kindergarten testing is held during one week each spring to
determine student’s readiness to start school. The specific dates for
testing are advertised in the newspaper and on posters around town. To

NEW EFFINGTON ELEMENTARY is attended by K-6 grade students of
New Effington and Claire City.
These students are then bused to Sisseton for grades 7-12. Browns Valley, MN,
students 9-12 also attend Sisseton. Sisseton school has received many awards
in the past in areas such as music, sports, and Future Business Leaders of
America.
A head start program is available to pre-schoolers meeting specific guidelines.
An open house is usually held each spring to visit the classroom and ask

TIOSPA ZINA TRIBAL SCHOOL, located at Old Agency, has an enrollment of over 400

THE SISSETON WAHPETON COLLEGE (SWC) was founded in 1979 to meet the
postsecondary needs of the Lake Traverse Reservation. It is chartered by the
Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate and accredited by the
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Its initial accreditation was
in 1990 and it was reaccredited in 1994. In 1999 SWC received a
seven-year accreditation through 2006. The College is located in Agency
Village, South Dakota. SWC is one of 34 tribal colleges located in the
United States and one of four serving American Indian students in SD. SWC's
doors are open to all peoples desiring their education.

variety of two year associate degree programs. Many vocational
and technical education courses, as well as an LPN degree in nursing
and a CPN certificate are offered. The Dakota Studies

SISSETON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION: (SEDC) was established to initiate
capital investments into the Sisseton region and to create job expansion through
the development and expansion of commercial business. Services SEDC can provide
include: loan guarantees, direct loans, and loan participation with lending

Sisseton has a 26-member volunteer fire department and 15-
member rescue squad with 4 EMTs. Both organizations
hold monthly training and informational meetings.

CITY OF SISSETON: The city of Sisseton was chartered and incorporated in 1892. Sisseton is
governed by a mayor and six ward aldermen. There is also a city attorney. Other

ROBERTS COUNTY : Roberts County was legally created by the Territorial Legislature in March
of 1883. Sisseton received the designation as the home of county government in
November 1898. The county is organized under the laws of the State of South
Dakota. The courthouse, which stands predominantly on the highest point in town,
is on the National Register in recognition of its historical and architectural
significance. It was built in 1902 with renovation in 1975. In 1977, it was
designated a federal historic building. The five commissioners elected by

SISSETON-WAHPETON: The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate is organized under a constitution approved
by its members and the Department of the Interior in 1966. The boundaries for
the Lake Traverse Reservation were established by a former treaty in 1867 and
modified in 1891. The reservation is one of three open reservations in South
Dakota. The open designation carries with it cross jurisdiction in law
enforcement and administration.

SENIOR NUTRITION SERVICES:
Senior meals are served Monday-Friday from 11 am-1 pm at The Cottage
restaurant at 45909 Highway #10. Meals are available to anyone age 60
or older and their spouse. Home delivered meals are also provided to
those meeting eligibility requirements. For more information please

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES:
Community Transit, Inc. provides public transportation
services to the city of Sisseton, Monday-Friday from 7:30 am
to 3:30 pm. Children are transported to school,
daycare, recreation, or any other destination. The bus
is equipped with a wheelchair lift to meet the needs of the
handicapped riders, This service is open to the public
and not just for senior citizens. Residents use the
mini-bus to go to work, shop, business, or just for
pleasure. We are a Medicaid approved transportation service
and provide rides to medical appointments at no charge to
the rider. Community Transit also provides service to
Watertown, Fargo, Aberdeen and other towns based upon a
schedule published in the Sisseton Courier. People
make medical appointments, shop, connect to airports or
train terminals, or any other purpose. For further

LANDFILL:
The city rubble site (which is limited to fill such as leaves and trees) is located
east of the cemetery. The Roberts County Sanitary Fill is located eight miles
southeast of Sisseton and is open at different times throughout the seasons. For information on garbage
pickup for your home, call (605) 698-3391. The city mails quarterly assessments
to residents for sanitation, water and sewage services.
**B&G Sanitation, provides a private/commercial garbage
hauling service in the Sisseton Area. Dumpsters and Port-A-Potties may also be purchased or rented

Coteau Des Prairies (CDP) Hospital & Clinic is a 31 bed, acute care, community
non-profit hospital, serving approximately 21,000 residents in the Glacial Lakes
Region in north east South Dakota, and west central Minnesota. CDP Hospital,
Inc. owns and operates the attached certified rural health clinic in Sisseton;
the Browns Valley Clinic; which is located in Browns Valley, Minnesota; and the
Wilmot Clinic, Wilmot, South Dakota. The hospital opened in 1967, and in 1996, a
14,000 square foot new addition and remodeling project, which cost $2.4 million,
was completed. In 2000, a $400,000 clinic expansion and remodeling project was
completed. |
Family practice physicians Dr. Judy Beumer (started 1988), Dr. David Oey (1974),
Dr. David Staub (1976) and Dr. Nanci VanPeursem (2000); OB/GYN Dr. Linda
Peterson (2003); Dr. David Kleinberg (2007) and Nurse Practitioners Lisa Bucklin
(2003) and Cindy Pallesen (2006) staff the hospital and
clinics. Dr. Joseph Kass, a surgeon and family practice physician, operates Kass
Clinic in Rosholt, SD, and Dr. Van, a surgeon from Milbank also does surgery at
CDP. Several specialists also schedule appointments at CDP Clinic on a regular
basis.
Services available at the hospital include: in-patient, out-patient, ICU/CCU,
observation, swing beds, birthing room, emergency room, in-patient and
out-patient surgery, scopes, home health, laboratory, X-Ray, ultrasound,

within the hospital complex. Dr. David
Merxbauer and Dr. Steve Baune provide
comprehensive dentistry for children and adults.
Complete family care includes cosmetic
dentistry, dentures, root canals, gum disease,
bridges, crowns, tooth whitening and orthodontic
corrections. The caring staff includes two
certified hygienists who specialize in
preventive care. Nitrous oxide sedation is

The Tekakwitha Living Center, 6 East Chestnut Street, Sisseton is a
member organization of the Benedictine Health System is an 81-bed long term care facility
with a 45-child daycare.. The facility is Medicare and Medicaid Certified.
Other services available are Speech Therapy, and

Greenleaf Assisted Living Center,
located in the southern section of Sisseton with a beautiful
view of the rolling hills and natural grasslands of Roberts
County; the facility is located three blocks from the
hospital and is very accessible from SD Highway #10.
The facility was opened July 1, 1999 and completed a 4000
square expansion in February, 2002.
Greenleaf Assisted Living Center is a 15,500 square foot
facility, licensed for 37 full time residents. There
are 12 private or semi-private double rooms, 9 single rooms
and 2 suites. Rooms have large walk in closets and
private showers. The facility also has a large central
dining room where home-cooked meals are served family-style,
